A postponement of a game is always a disappointment, this postponement being announced on the day of the game is even worse and frustrating.

This is what happened with Morecambe’s trip to Exeter on Saturday afternoon with a heavy downpour forcing the referee to call off the game just 90-minutes or so before the 3pm kick off time.

It’s not often that a boss defends a referee but Jim Bentley has done just that, saying that he feels that Andy D’Urso had little choice but to call the game off not that it made this any less disappointing for the fans in particular that made the journey.

Bentley told the official website: ‘It’s a real blow for everyone, the players and the fans, and it is especially disappointing as it has come so late in the day.

‘But the referee had no choice and it is just one of those things. The pitch was alright at lunchtime but it rained hard for a long period and the forecast was also poor so we just have to take it on the chin and move on.

‘I feel sorry for the fans that made the journey down and we all really do appreciate their support.’
