Garry Thompson – scorer of Morecambe`s equaliser against Exeter City in the most important game of the Shrimps` history: the Conference Play-Off Final – returned to the Lancashire seaside on Tuesday night with his new team, Wycombe Wanderers – and departed at the end of ninety minutes with all thee points. Thommo also departed with a yellow card but he probably wouldn`t swap this for the win against his former club. Morecambe have a very poor record against the Chairboys. In the twelve games they had contested previously, Morecambe have only ever won once. Ironically, this was just four months ago at Adams Park, when the Lancashire side put a spanner in the works of Gareth Ainsworth`s promotion-chasing team by winning one-nil. But tonight, Normal Service Was Resumed with the only goal of the game being scored by the man Morecambe Manager Jim Bentley identified as the outstanding player on the field: Aaron Pierre. This came from a set piece after a foul by Kevin Ellison: Pierre headed the ball low into the corner of Barry Roche`s net from Joe Jacobson`s free kick after 73 minutes. The Shrimps huffed and puffed and played quite well at times according to their Manager but he must be concerned that – just as was the case against Hartlepool on the opening day of the season and again versus Sheffield United a week ago – his team couldn`t convert chances or possession into goals. At the end of the match, Morecambe found themselves in sixteenth position in League Two. At the other end of the table, Wycombe`s one hundred percent record so far found them perched right on top of the table with nine points from three games played.Ref: Mark Heywood.
