The last time Morecambe played at the Globe Arena, it was to face their Nemesis Accrington Stanley – a team which history decrees they are never able to beat in the League.

They duly lost.

On Saturday, the visitors to the Lancashire seaside for this First Round FA Cup tie were one of Morecambe’s favourite opponents; a team which has never beaten them and from whom Jim Bentley’s side had already taken the traditional three points on their own patch as recently as September. On past form, all Morecambe had to do was turn up.

Sadly, Phil Brown’s Boys hadn’t read the script.

Only four minutes had been played when Shrimps Old Boy Kevan Hurst slung over a cross which Anthony Straker bundled past Barry Roche in the home goal. Two minutes later, the same player scored again and the game was effectively over.

In a totally lacklustre display, Morecambe never looked as if they were going to get to grips with the visitors, whose victory was sealed in the final minute by a long-range shot by Ryan Leonard.

So all good things come to an end: the Shrimpers have finally found the net more often than the Shrimps.

Southend’s reward for the victory is to be drawn away at Chesterfield in the Second Round.
