Morecambe Football Club has released the following statement as far as retained and released players are concerned for next season:

“Peter Murphy and Liam Wakefield have been released by the Shrimps with contract offers made to Michael Rose, Kevin Ellison, Barry Roche, Aaron Wildig, Alex Kenyon, Paul Mullin and Ryan Edwards.

Talks are still ongoing with Andy Fleming and Lee Molynuex while Bentley is also discussing options with several youth team players.

Loan players Alex Whitmore, Antony Evans and Michael Duckworth have returned to their parent clubs.

Dan Nizic, Luke Conlan, Aaron McGowan, Dean Winnard, Rhys Turner, Luke Jordan and Tyler Brownsword are all under contract for next season.”

Peter Murphy, the club`s captain last season, has subsequently tweeted: “I was informed over the phone that I was to be released`. Facing further surgery for the injuries which blighted his time with the Shrimps, he added: “Subsequent to that phone call, I was informed by the surgeon the very next day that the (latest) injury I had sustained is career ending, forcing me to retire from playing football.” It`s a sad way to have to hang up your boots and I`m sure all Shrimps supporters will wish Peter all the best for his future and thank him for the impact he made particularly this season just ended in keeping Morecambe in the Football League. At just 27 years of age, this must be a worrying time for both the ex-player and his family. Good luck to the lad: he`s overdue some in my view at least.
