Morecambe earned a very good draw after a good performance against a very strong Derby County side on Friday night.

Gary McDonald made his full debut in this game.

Morecambe looked to have taken an early lead in the 8th minute when Danny Carlton bundled home the ball but the goal was ruled out for a foul.

In the 65th minute Derby took the lead when a Ben Davis cross could only be helped into the net by former Rotherham captain Nick Fenton.

Morecambe didn’t lie down though and on 78 minutes the Shrimps were level. Laurence Wilson who had been in superb form all night beat a trio of Derby players before the ball found Sean Breen who’s shot hit the hand of the Rams Russell Anderson and a penalty was awarded. Wilson stepped up and converted from the spot to give Morecambe a very much deserved equaliser.

With 10 minutes left Wilson again made another fantastic run down the wing and crossed the ball the Sean Breen who couln’t get a proper connection with the ball and it went wide of the post.

Overall a very promising display and if things keep going as they are we are in for a great season.

Next up is Stuart Drummond’s testimonial game at home to Preston North End on Wednesday.

Vital Morecambe would like to wish Jim and the team all the best for the 2011/12 season.
