Morecambe failed to gain all points for the first time this season at lowly Tranmere today despite leading the game at one point.

Their former captain, Mark Hughes, opened the scoring with an excellent header from a corner after 38 minutes. It took the Wirral club almost an hour to equalise, when Cole Stockton scored with as well-placed shot from within the Shrimps’ penalty area.

The key moment of the match arrived five minutes later, though, when Hughes was shown a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident with former Accrington Stanley player Kayode Odejayi.

From then on, it was backs to the wall for the visitors but their resilience was finally broken right at the death when Stockton scored again in the final minute of normal time after a mistake by Andy Parrish.

The loss means that Morecambe drop to third in League Two; Tranmere go up to eleventh.
