The first team player that was leaving Morecambe due to cost cutting measures has been confirmed as Nick Fenton.

Both parties wanted to see a Shrimps future, however financially this wasn’t possible and the 33-year-old has had his contract terminated with him paid up and now looking for a new club.

Jim Bentley, as told BBC Radio Lancashire, has confirmed this saying: ‘Nick wanted to stay at the club and we wanted him to stay at the club, but we can’t make ends meet.

‘We’ve agreed to pay his contract up and he’ll leave the club. That wobbles you because he’s a big figure in the dressing room and the type of player that others look up to.

‘I put the news to them that he’s leaving and it’s sad to see. I’m devastated because he’s a great lad.’

Fenton, who has been injured since March 23rd, is training to become a physio so could move into that field if he doesn’t extend his playing career?

Bentley does expect “one or two” other players to follow the defender through the exit gates of The Globe this summer but intends to keep the squad “competitive” for next season and beyond.
