The Shrimps had never been beaten by a non-League club during their League career previously but this all changed at the Crabble Ground on Saturday. Joe Lumley, signed on-loan from QPR on Friday to cover cup-tied Scott Davis in the Morecambe goal, received a baptism of fire at non-League Dover Athletic in the FA Cup First Round. Stefan Payne beat him in the dying moments of first half injury time to put the Conference side ahead in the tie. There were chances at either end during the second period but Morecambe were simply not good enough to recover a losing position and Athletic deservedly found themselves in the draw for the second round at the end of the game. For Morecambe, the loss marks a further dip in form and Jim Bentley`s side find themselves with just a League campaign left to play for having fallen at the first hurdle for the second time in Cup competitions this term. It could be a long Winter for the Lancashire team unless the manager manages to re-discover some of the grit and determination which brought Morecambe such good results at the beginning of the season: both qualities were in very short supply at Dover against inferior opposition.
