Bentley: We Kept Plugging Away

Morecambe left it late but managed to get the goal late on that earned us, what was probably a deserved point at Stevenage Borough on Saturday afternoon.

The wasteful finishing in the first half, which Jim Bentley was left disappointed by, looked like it could cost us but an equaliser with time running out meant we came away from the Lamex Stadium with a 1-1 draw.

Bentley believes that had we taken our first half chances we could have been ‘out of sight’ by the time half time arrived and this disappointed him.

Speaking to the media after the game he said: ‘I think on our first half performance we could have been out of sight because we had some decent chances where maybe we need to use our head a little bit more.

‘We just couldn’t take one of those chances and I thought we looked solid at the back.

A little past the hour Simon Walton (62) successfully converted from the penalty spot to put Stevenage ahead but we battled away and Padraig Amond’s (85) header five-minutes from time earned us a point and a one-one draw.

Bentley gave ‘credit were credit’s due’ to the referee and admitted that his decision to award Stevenage the penalty was the right call but thought we got the rewards we deserved for the fact we ‘kept plugging away’ even with player that have been struggling with injuries or just return.

He added: ‘We had players out there who’ve been injured for a long time, Jamie Devitt being one of them.

‘In the end a great delivery by Jamie from a corner and a fabulous header has got us a point.’
