The league two season continued at the weekend with Morecambe in action again, they finally got back to winning ways.

Morecambe broke the long overdue duck of waiting to win when they came from behind to beat Southend United 2-1 at the Globe Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Whenever you are thrashed, as the Shrimps were in the game before, you ‘want a response’ and Jim Bentley got exactly what he wanted and he couldn’t have been happier with the character shown to earn the points.

The Morecambe boss said: ‘I wanted a response after our 5-0 hammering at Plymouth and I got it.

‘We have had a tough week. The lads have been in every day and we have worked them really hard and it paid dividends finally.

‘We made things difficult for ourselves once again, though, by conceding an early goal again but after that we rolled up our sleeves and showed great character and determination to get the points.

‘We never let our heads drop and I’m so pleased for everyone, the players and the fans because they have been through a tough few weeks but showed great spirit to take three vital points.

Ryan Leonard had given Southend an early lead before Kevin Ellison drew Morecambe level. Jack Redshaw then came off the bench to make an almost instant impact in scoring the winner.

This win, so long in coming, is now one that the boss hopes can be built upon to ensure that safety in league two is secured.

He added: ‘Hopefully now we can build on this and get a few more wins to secure our safety.’
